Nighty is a garment that ladies prefer to wear while they go to sleep at night and hence the name. If you look at the beginning of when women started wearing nighties, it goes back to the Victorian era.
However, at the start of this fashion, it was considered only for the elite ones. A nightdress was a sign of how wealthy one is during that period.
Nighties underwent a lot of changes from that age. Over the course of time, nighties became affordable to anyone and started to be made in all types of fabrics. Even now satin nighties are considered elite.
Initially, the nightdress helped ladies to keep themselves warm at night. It was a full-length dress with even full sleeves. Later it became fashionable that nighties can be of any length and could be with or without sleeves.
Nowadays, nighties are made in cotton, satin, synthetic, and all types of different fabric combinations. Depending upon the weather conditions applicable to their country or region, ladies prefer the materials accordingly. In hotter climates, cotton fabric is used widely, while in colder regions, synthetic and satin nighties are preferred to be worn.
Comfort is the ultimate criteria when it comes to nighties. These long, maxi dresses are tailored to be loose fitting and hence these are super comfortable while sleeping. This is the reason why most ladies prefer to be in a nighty while going to bed.
Nighties come in all sizes and shapes and also in all designs. There are nighties with lots of laces and frills to make one feel more feminine, and there are ones that are plain and simple.
Even though nightdresses are supposed to be worn only while you sleep, these days, a nightie is worn during the daytime too while at home. Women who are doing household chores prefer to wear a nighty since they do not want to wear expensive dresses that may go bad with rough usage.
The colouring and flavouring agents that are used in Indian cooking can stain the dress and hence ladies opt to wear a nightie made with a cheaper material which is okay even if it gets soiled or stained. Also, the nighties worn at home while doing the cooking, etc. would be in dark colours which can hide the stains and also can be easily washed and dried.
Nighties are easy to maintain. You can use it casually and machine-wash and dry under the hot sun, it won’t get damaged easily (depends upon the fabric type though.)
Another reason for the popularity of the nighty is that it is easy to wear.
You can change into a nighty from your formal dress in a few seconds flat! It is easy to wear and remove. Sometimes nighties will have hooks, buttons, or zips, but even otherwise, the nighties are made so loose-fitting, that you are able to get into it without opening a hook!
There are myriads of reasons why women wear nighties. Just from being comfortable, to insulate from weather conditions to style factor to easy maintainability.
Whatever the reason is, women are hooked on to the nighties and this style is going to stay for a long time for sure!
